Profile
Scipio Aemilianus (185-129 BCE, full name Publius Cornelius Scipio Africanus Aemilianus) was a prominent commander and statesman of the Roman Republic. Known for both his military prowess and his political acumen, he served two terms as Consul of Rome.
Scipio Aemilianus's most famous achievement was his siege and capture of the city of Carthage, which marked the decisive end to the century-long struggle for supremacy between Rome and Carthage. Besides his campaigns in North Africa, Aemilianus is also known for his conquests in Hispania, where he showcased his strategic shrewdness in capturing the Celtiberian city of Numantia. He was a gifted orator and a patron of scholars, and was always accompanied by an entourage of writers and luminaries discussing art, philosophy, and science.
With his strategic, political, and intellectual brilliance, Scipio Aemilianus accomplished many legendary feats throughout his life and during his time as Consul. He cemented Rome's long-running conquest of the western Mediterranean, and his legacy can be felt today in the influence of Roman culture in those lands.
