Profile
Achilles is one of the most famous heroes of Greek mythology and the primary character in Homer's "Iliad". He was born to the nymph Thetis—daughter of the sea god Nereus—and Peleus, mortal king of the Myrmidons of Phthia. Achilles' divine heritage endowed him with immense strength, but his human half left him mortal and vulnerable. To protect her beloved son, Thetis dipped the infant Achilles into the River Styx, rendering him invulnerable to physical harm. When doing so, however, she held him by his heel, leaving it the only part of his body unprotected. According to later legends, when Agamemnon called the Achaeans to war, Thetis hid her son on the Aegean island of Skyros, hoping to keep him from the bloodshed. Sent to recruit Achilles, the clever King Odysseus used a ruse to draw the demigod out of hiding. Once discovered, Achilles was compelled to join the war effort. In the early engagements of the Trojan War, Achilles quickly proved himself one of the Greek coalition's mightiest warriors, earning respect, glory, and loot. A wroth and temperamental man, Achilles soon came into conflict with the equally-prideful Agamemnon. When the latter took away his slave Briseis, an enraged Achilles refused to fight in any more battles. Achilles was replaced as the commander of the Myrmidon host by Patroclus, his dear companion (their exact relationship is debated). Though he fought bravely, Patroclus was slain by Hector, the crown prince and mightiest warrior of Troy. Bereaved and enraged, Achilles finally rejoined the fray, defeating and killing Hector in a climactic duel. Still furious, Achilles desecrated Hector's body (a grave affront to the gods) and initially refused to return the prince's body to his father. Towards the end of the Trojan War, Achilles' wrath would spell his doom. Paris, younger brother of the slain Hector, fired an arrow at Achilles. Angered by the killing and dishonorable treatment of Hector (one of his favorites), Apollo guided Paris' arrow to strike Achilles' heel, killing the legendary hero. The character of Achilles is the epitome of the flawed, tragic hero—representing the moral complexity that has made Greek mythology so compelling to audiences throughout the ages. A tangled mix of strength, weakness, valor, and dishonor, Achilles remains an iconic figure in the Western literary canon.
