Profile

Afonso de Albuquerque (1453-1515) was a visionary commander, admiral, and administrator in service to the Portuguese Empire. Born into a noble family with strong historic ties to the Portuguese crown, he devoted himself to the maritime expansion of the empire and establishing its near total control over the Indian Ocean. After capturing several key port cities along the Indian Ocean trade route, Afonso was named the Viceroy of Portuguese India. Capturing the Indian port city of Goa after a difficult battle against a far more numerous entrenched enemy, he built Goa into Portugal's political and military center in Asia. He was renowned not just for his conquests, but also for his administration, implementing land, tax, and religious reforms in the territory he conquered. After solidifying control over the Indian Ocean, he turned his attention further east. His capture of Malacca gave Portugal control over the extremely important Strait of Malacca, allowing them to prevent any of their rivals in the west from accessing the incredibly-lucrative maritime trade with East Asia. Though his later expedition to contain the power of the rising Mamluks ultimately failed, his fleet penetrated deeper into the Red Sea than any European navy before him. Though the actual size of Albuquerque's conquests may seem small compared to the later European colonial empires, his capture and fortification of key ports turned Portugal into the most dominant thalassocracy in Europe. With his strategic foresight and administrative acumen, he set the model for maritime power in the east. For centuries to come, rival empires would fight viciously to reestablish the control he held over the eastern seas.
