Profile

Trajan was the second Emperor of Rome of the Nerva-Antonine dynasty, ruling from 98-117. Born in modern-day Spain, he was the first Emperor to come from beyond the Apennines. During Trajan's reign, he oversaw a great expansion of Rome's borders, the second greatest in the Empire's history. However, it was his accomplishments as a civic ruler that earned him the love and respect of Rome, including many public building programs, and a welfare program for poor and orphaned children. Near the end of his reign, he built Trajan's Column, a monument recording his military achievements, under which his ashes were later buried. In recognition of his many accomplishments, the Roman Senate bestowed on him the title of Optimus Princeps, meaning "the best ruler".
