In Esperia, many marvel at the heavens, dazzled by the glittering stars, while few spare a glance for the quiet light of the moon. Though it lacks the stars' fierce glow, it never falters, keeping silent watch in the loneliest of hours. And Selene is that moonlight made flesh. Some say she was born from the sorrow and prayers of mortals, a goddess claimed by neither dawn nor shadow, but by those who yearn for a single ray of light in the depths of night. She never bends fate, never interferes. Silent, she simply shines, her moonlight brushing across the tears of orphans, the resolve of soldiers, and the stillness of the old. For the truly sorrowful never cry out. They simply lift their eyes to the moon, and in that instant, she answers. Through the darkness of night, she walks beside many lonely souls. In a remote town, a girl who lost her parents sat by the window each evening, pouring her grief to the moon, the only listener she had left. One night, moonlight slipped into her room like gauze, and in her dreams she glimpsed a gentle woman sitting at her bedside. From then on, that silver figure came to her in the night, whispering words of comfort, until the girl learned to smile again. On a war-torn frontier, soldiers prayed to the moon for their lovers waiting far away. When moonlight spilled over the battlefield, even in their darkest hour, they remembered their beloveds smile and found the strength to endure. When the war finally ended, they embraced beneath the moonlight, quietly thanking the guardian who had kept watch. By a desolate shore, an aging lighthouse keeper had lost track of how long he had kept watch. He spoke to the moon night after night, and the moon listened in silence until his final breath. That night, she lit one last soft gleam to guide his soul toward peace. Such was Selene—always watching over the helpless, asking nothing in return. But endless vigil wears heavy on even the heart of a goddess. She came to realize that mortals thought of her only in sorrow, as if her very being existed only for tears and silence. Their truest feelings shone at night, yet once day returned, they rushed toward the sun, leaving her light to fade quietly into the sky. Her radiance dimmed and her heart sank into voiceless tides. She ceased answering prayers, slipping into the shadows of night to escape the clamor that was never meant for her. Perhaps her light was never that important. Perhaps the world never truly needed her. Until she heard those familiar voices again. The girl, grown now, still spoke softly to the moon, telling her how happy she was because in her darkest days, a gentle light had walked beside her. The soldier and his lover, reunited, still gazed skyward on clear nights, grateful for the courage moonlight once gave them. On the coast, villagers lit candles at the lighthouse's base, offering blessings to the lonely keeper and praying for his peace across the waters. The tender voices layered one upon another, easing her doubt. And in that moment, Selene realized she had never been forgotten. Her glow returned to the night, shining once more for all who still sought her glow. Yet as she grew bright again, her heart felt a sorrow unlike any she had ever known. It was a broken prayer... blurred, distant, born of some far shore. Its rhythm was strange, its emotions tangled with terror, despair, and a desperate struggle woven together. Selene tried to send her light in answer, but struck an invisible wall. Her radiance shattered against it, swallowed by a widening rift. Following the cry, she gazed deep into the current of time—and saw an Esperia both achingly familiar and utterly changed. The mountains stood and the stars wheeled, but at unseen junctures, destiny had slipped, as if nudged just a hair off-course. A long fissure split across the world like ice breaking in winter, and from it seeped thick shadows, spreading through the seams of reality. The faces she knew were there, yet their eyes no longer shone. They held only coldness, regret, chaos, and denial. It was a world stripped of redemption, where no one was truly saved, and no one dared even hope for light. Selene felt powerless. She couldn't cross the rift, couldn't speak in the name of the divine, couldn't even let them feel her presence. All she could do was linger at the edge where two rivers of time brushed past one another, scattering a fleeting gleam into their dreams. A light that might fade in an instant... but a light nonetheless. Day after day, she kept watch over the familiar lands of Esperia, even as she lingered by the edge of that fissure, quietly casting moonlight into the chaos beyond. Perhaps the darkness would never answer, but still, stubbornly, she lit her glow against it. And at last, within that silence, she sensed the faintest reply. Not words, not prayers—only a glance lifted toward the night sky, a weary traveler pausing mid-step, a child raising tear-brimmed eyes. In that instant, Selene understood: even if she could never truly reach across, some souls still felt her. So long as sorrow looked skyward, even for a heartbeat, moonlight would always answer. But she wasn't the only one watching this world. Two vast wills lingered at the far edge of the rift, their gazes sharp as blades forged from time itself, coldly weighing the branching current of fate. Selene knew their names—Orthros and Zolrath. Her heart tightened. Until now she had thought the rift was mere accident, a fracture spilling sorrow, a wound dripping shadows from some other world. Yet seeing those two, whose hands had all but molded time itself, she felt a flare of anger. Could it be that all of this was nothing more than their game, an endless cycle of tearing apart and stitching back the flow of time? That the prayers she answered with such care were mere illusions in a story they had written? She couldn't accept that the world she wept for was only a chessboard, or that the loneliness in those eyes was nothing more than lines in some cosmic script. Her glow slowly dimmed as she tried to turn from the fissure... only to feel something deeper still. It was no Celestial, no Hypogean. A presence without voice or form, vast and silent, as though it stood on a higher plane, watching from beyond. Its gaze encompassed not only her, but Orthros and Zolrath as well, folding them all within its sight. A chill stole through her, yet just as swiftly as it came, the gaze withdrew, vanishing as if it had sensed her notice and slipped away. For the first time, Selene felt true fear. A will beyond even time itself was cutting open a deeper wound. She lingered in silence, doubts heavy within her. Yet at last she raised her hand, sending out a thin thread of moonlight, letting it drift into that broken seam. She might never grasp the truth of this world's fracture. She couldn't halt the struggles of Celestials, Hypogeans, or whatever lay beyond. But still, she knew the souls living within were real. Their grief, their joy, their whispered prayers were no different from the Esperia she had always guarded. She was only moonlight, a quiet sentinel of sleeping worlds. She served no master, promised no miracles. She simply answered the voiceless pleas of sorrow. And so, even across the greatest distance, so long as one soul still lifts their eyes to the night, her light will rise. A single, gentle gleam, belonging only to them.
