Profile
William Marshal was born into minor English nobility. As a younger son without inheritance, he entered knighthood early on in life and dominated military tournaments with exceptional martial prowess, eventually making a name for himself from a landless knight into the Earl of Pembroke. He served five English kings over his lifetime, and undertook a crusade to the Holy Land to fulfill a vow made to the Young King Henry before his death. After the death of King John in 1216, Marshal was appointed as protector and regent of the 9-year-old Henry III. The following year, he led the English to victory in the Battle of Lincoln despite being in his 70s, and facilitated negotiations to re-issue the Magna Carta that helped stabilize a kingdom in conflict. William Marshal is often hailed as the embodiment of medieval chivalry, who demonstrated throughout his life the principles of courage, honor, and noble service.
