Profile
Ivan IV Vasilyevich was crowned Tsar of All Russia in 1547 and is now commonly known as "Ivan the Terrible" (meaning formidable or inspiring terror).
During the early years of his reign, Ivan IV revised the Sudebnik legal code and established the Zemsky Sobor, a new convening assembly with the Tsar. He pushed for local and military reforms in efforts to consolidate centralized power, and eventually conquered the khanates of Kazan and Astrakhan so that Moscow had control over the entire length of the Volga River. After the death of Tsaritsa Anastasia, setbacks in the Livonian War, and increasing political distrust in the later years of his rule, Ivan IV grew to favor the oprichniki, a state police he developed known for mass repression, public execution, and property confiscation of political opposition, and who were responsible for the massacre of Novgorod. Ongoing war and heightened control exacerbated population decline and economic depression, ultimately undermining the legacy and stability of the tsardom. A Tsar of mixed reputation, Ivan IV's reign is marked by both reform and growth, as well as despotism and cruelty.
