Elizabeth I was the fifth and last monarch of the Tudors. Her reign as Queen of England and Ireland from 1558 to 1603 marked an important period of English social change and national growth, and is thus known as the Elizabethan era. Elizabeth I was born in 1533 as the daughter of Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn. During the rule of her half sister Mary I, Elizabeth was briefly imprisoned on suspicion of supporting Protestant rebels. After ascending to the throne in 1558 following the death of Mary, Elizabeth issued a series of arrangements — including the Act of Supremacy and the Act of Uniformity — referred to as the Elizabethan Religious Settlement. These acts helped establish an English church that relieved the religious division in England at the time. Never married, she frequently would use her hand in marriage as political bargain, maneuvering between the European powers of France and Spain in effort to maintain English sovereignty and security. After her death in 1603, Elizabeth was succeeded by her first cousin twice removed, James VI of Scotland, which effectively marked the end of the Tudor dynasty. The reign of Elizabeth I offered more than 40 years of relative stability for England. During this period, English literature and drama flourished alongside maritime exploration; lending full support to privateers and expeditioners such as Francis Drake, she laid the foundations for England's premodern naval operations and global commerce network.
