Vercingetorix was a Gallic chieftain of the Arverni tribe as well as a prominent military leader in the history of Gaul. In the latter period of the Gallic Wars, he united several Gallic tribes in an armed coalition against Roman expansion.
Vercingetorix (b. 82 BC) was elected as leader of the Gallic coalition in 52 BC and initiated a large-scale revolt against Julius Caesar. In the beginning of the battle, he heavily utilized barricade and resource depletion strategies to effectively cut off Roman supplies. In fall of the same year, the army was forced to retreat in the Battle of Alesia after being surrounded by Caesar's troops. Unable to make a breakthrough or call for successful aid, Vercingetorix eventually surrendered to the Romans and, after being taken prisoner to Rome, was executed after Caesar's triumph in 46 BC.
Vercingetorix was the first political and military leader to have united major Gallic tribes in history. Since the 19th century, he is increasingly revered as a national hero of France — an important cultural symbol of French resistance against foreign aggression.
