Profile
Hayam Wuruk was born into Majapahit royalty and inherited the throne in 1350 as a young 16-year old emperor. Together with prime minister Gajah Mada, they ruled the empire at the height of its power. Making massive strides in political and economic influence, Hayam Wuruk led Majapahit to become one of the greatest powers in Southeast Asia.
During his reign, the Majapahit empire launched wars against Sumatra and Bali and, along with establishing tributaries and alliances, these campaigns effectively expanded Majapahit territory until the mighty thalassocracy dominated the entire Malacca Strait spice trade. Working closely with Gajah Mada, Hayam Wuruk also encouraged developments in commerce, culture, and religious exchange. In his personal life, Hayam Wuruk was known for his penchant for grandeur as a patron of the arts and devout practitioner of religion; much of the ceremonial rites and royal practices of his court are recorded in detail in the Nagarakretagama, the famed Old Javanese eulogy.
After Hayam Wuruk's death in 1389, a civil war over the right to succession erupted and led to the gradual decline of the great Majapahit empire.
