Profile
Alp Arslan became sultan of the Seljuk empire in 1063 at the age of 33. Under his reign, the empire reached its peak in military and cultural fronts, marking the beginning of a new era in the middle east.
Alp Arslan's name, which meant "heroic lion" in Turkic, was befitting of his stature as a great conqueror. During his 1071 campaign against the Byzantine Empire, Alp Arslan won the decisive Battle of Manzikert, where he used a crescent formation and lured the Byzantines into a punishing ambush. Even the emperor Romanos IV was captured, though he was later released in what has now become a highly popularized tale. Byzantine defense on the eastern front heavily suffered from this defeat, and the battle decidedly shifted the balance in Anatolia in favor of Seljuk ascendancy.
Outside of military campaigns, Alp Arslan also pushed for administrative and academic advancements. He supported the construction of several higher institutions and was known as a patron of scholars and artists. For his many contributions, his reign is recognized as belonging to a period of the Islamic Golden Age.
