Ivar the Boneless was a Viking commander active in the British Isles and Ireland in the ninth century, claimed by sagas to be the son of Ragnar Lodbrok. In 865 CE, he led a coalition of armies in an invasion of East Anglia, spending the winter there before moving on to raid York in 866. In 867, he inflicted a heavy defeat upon the King of Northumbria, setting up camp in Nottingham for the winter and intermittently waging war against Mercia and Wessex, exacting tribute and free passage through sieges and negotiation. In 869, he invaded East Anglia again, where he executed King Edmund. After the assault he took his forces across the Irish Sea, establishing a stronghold in between Britain and Ireland and making Dublin one of the centers of his power. In 870 he laid siege to Alt Clut (Dumbarton Rock), returning to Dublin in 871 with plentiful captives and loot. He appears infrequently in subsequent English records, his figure and deeds scattered to the winds like the rubble of the cities he pillaged.
