Profile

Gang Gamchan (948-1031) was a renowned general and statesman of Korea's Goryeo dynasty, remembered for his mastery of both civil and martial affairs. As legend has it, on the day Gang Gamchan was born, a meteor shot through the sky towards his house. His birthplace would later be renamed to Nakseongdae ("where the star fell"). In 983, Gang Gamchan placed first in the civil service examination, officially entering government service. In 1009, responding to political instability in Goryeo, the Khitan Liao dynasty of Northern China invaded the kingdom, starting the second Khitan-Goryeo war. Though a relatively minor official at the time, Gang managed to convince King Hyeonjong of Goryeo to escape the palace at Gaeju and retreat south to Naju, where they would wait for a chance to strike. Due to overstretched supply lines and a zealous insurgency campaign from Goryeo's forces, the Liao army was forced to withdraw. As a result of his service during the war, Gang received several promotions and important posts. In 1018, the Liao returned with another invasion force, and Gang Gamchan became one of the few voices urging the king to resist the invaders. Gang was tapped to serve as supreme commander of the Goryeo forces for the duration of the war. Despite being over 70 years old by this point, he proved to be a clever and resourceful commander. At Heunghwajin, Gang opened up a dammed stream to flood the Liao army, then annihilated the survivors at the Battle of Gwiju. For his victory, Gang Gamchan became a national hero and was credited as the savior of the nation. In 1974, the Anguksa shrine was built at Nakseongdae, where every year a ceremony is held to honor the legendary general.
