Profile
Eldest son of King Priam of Troy, Prince Hector was Troy's mightiest warrior and its primary defender during the Trojan War. Though a "mere mortal" in a story of gods and demigods, Hector demonstrated all the qualities of an ideal prince—brave, dutiful, honorable (most of the time), and unceasingly loyal to his people. When his younger brother Paris eloped with Queen Helen of Sparta, Hector began preparing to defend the city from the coming reprisal. An outstanding commander and leader, Hector gathered all of Troy's allies into a force that could rival the Achaean coalition. Hector's martial prowess was equally impressive, thanks in no small part to the patronage of Apollo, who considered the prince one of his favorites. In the face of Greek's greatest heroes, the prince demonstrated his valor and might, slaying mighty warriors like Patroclus and Protesilaus. Reputedly a peace-loving family man by nature, Hector's ferocity on the battlefield exemplified his tragic sense of duty and honor. In the face of a raging Achilles seeking vengeance for the death of Patroclus, Hector fled, his bravery briefly failing him. Despite this moment of weakness, however, the prince showed no hesitation when he was ultimately forced to duel Achilles. Even with the knowledge of Achilles' invulnerability, Hector heroically threw himself at the demigod with one final, symbolic charge. His last act was to prophesize Achilles' death at the hands of Paris and Apollo, which would not long after come true. Hector's death spelled the beginning of the end for Troy, now deprived of its greatest warrior. Rather than a joyous occasion, as one might expect of a Greek author writing about the death of a mortal enemy of the Greeks, Homer's Iliad treats Hector's death and funeral as a somber event—the tragic finale to a tragic tale. Though not as famous as his rival, Hector has remained an icon of honor and valor, the moral foil to the mighty-but-flawed Achilles. In the late middle ages, he was included among the ranks of the Nine Worthies, nine historical and mythical heroes considered to be the personifications of medieval chivalry (Achilles is notably not among their number).
