Profile
Mary I Tudor, Queen of England and Ireland, was the only surviving child of Henry VIII and his first wife, Catherine of Aragon. She was the first woman to officially rule England in her own right, beginning a long legacy of influential British queens. A bright child, she was fluent in multiple languages and was a talented musician, but the breakdown of her parents' marriage and her devout Catholicism caused her to be excluded from the succession. After the death of Mary's younger brother Edward VI in 1553, the throne instead went to her distant relative Lady Jane Grey, the "Nine Days Queen". With the support of most of the nobility and the commons, Mary deposed the Lady Grey after only nine days. In 1554, she married Philip the Prudent, prince (and future king) of Spain. The marriage was deeply unpopular with the increasingly Protestant population, sparking insurrections across the country. Her reign also saw the loss of Calais—England's last continental holding—and a declining economy (though this was mostly the fault of her spendthrift father). Mary died in 1558, at the age of 42. With no children to succeed her, the throne went to her half-sister, Elizabeth I. Mary I's driving agenda throughout her reign was the restoration of Catholicism in England. To that end, she worked to reverse her father's religious reforms and restore relations with the Catholic world. Her often-violent repression of Protestants earned her the nickname "Bloody Mary" by later historians, though modern historians continue to debate how much her brutal reputation was justified. Though still controversial, Mary's short reign proved memorable. Though they had yet to bear fruit during her own reign, many of her efforts would prove beneficial to the reign of her sister, a golden age of English history.
