Profile

Archimedes (c. 287 - 212 BCE) was a groundbreaking mathematician, scientist, and inventor, referred to by some as "the father of mathematics". Born on the island of Sicily in the ancient Greek city-state of Syracuse, Archimedes devoted his entire life to science. His works have had a foundational impact on the fields of geometry, calculus, fluid mechanics, statics, and more. Among his many achievements, one of his most notable includes formulating the law of buoyancy (the "Archimedes' principle"). He was also a prolific inventor, inventing the "Archimedes' screw" (a type of screw pump still in use today) and strange war machines used to defend Syracuse from the Romans (though many of these, like his "iron hand", were so fantastical that many historians question if they were real or not). He is often quoted as saying, "Give me a lever and fulcrum, and I shall move the world." In the area of mathematics, he was a pioneer in the study of infinitesimals (a predecessor to calculus), was possibly the first person to find the area and volume of a sphere, and proposed a new method for approximating the value of pi. His scientific curiosity and innovative thinking, reflected in his countless tangible contributions, have profoundly influenced future scholars. Though the Roman commander wanted him spared out of respect (and because of his potential usefulness), Archimedes was killed by an unknowing Roman soldier when they captured Syracuse. His apocryphal final words were "Do not disturb my circles" (referring to mathematical figures he was drawing in the dust), a testament to how he devoted his life to learning.
