Profile
Though the legendary Brythonic king known as "King Arthur" probably originates from early Welsh mythology, the best known form of his legend comes from the corpus of medieval chivalric literature known collectively as "the Matter of Britain". In this literary tradition, King Arthur was the illegitimate son of Uther Pendragon, King of the Britons, and the famous beauty Igraine. He is protected and secretly raised by Merlin (portrayed in some sources as a wizard), remaining unaware of his own origins. When Uther dies without an apparent heir, Arthur inadvertently proves himself to be the rightful King of the Britons by pulling out the famous "sword in the stone" (in traditional accounts, the sword is actually in an anvil on top of the stone). As king, Arthur founds the Knights of the Round Table, a chivalric order where all members are equal, dedicated to pursuing the Holy Grail and maintaining peace in Arthur's kingdom. Another well-known aspect of the King Arthur tale is his legendary magical sword Excalibur, which is granted to him by the mystical Lady of the Lake after the sword he pulled from the stone breaks. In the traditional tale, King Arthur meets his end at the Battle of Camlann (later renamed to the "Battle of Salisbury") when he is stabbed by Mordred, his own illegitimate son. In his final act of glory, King Arthur uses the last of his strength to kill Mordred in turn. Before he dies, King Arthur orders Excalibur returned to the Lady of the Lake. Though King Arthur likely never existed (the medieval depiction of him certainly did not), he served as the model for chivalry for medieval knights and princes, and he remains an extremely important cultural hero for the peoples of Britain.
