Profile

Subutai (c. 1176-1248) was a prominent commander and strategist of the Mongol Empire. One of the "Four Dogs of Temujin", Genghis Khan's four most trusted generals, he was renowned as a brilliant strategist and commander who developed innovative tactics centuries ahead of their time. An early follower of Genghis Khan, Subutai served as an important commander in the Mongol conquests of Central Asia, China, and Russia. He excelled at agile tactics, especially in long, far-reaching expeditions, often relying on lightning-fast raids to mislead, divide, and outflank his enemies. These precise strikes gave the Mongols the element of surprise, and they played a crucial role in the expansion of the empire. Not only was Subutai a brave warrior, he was also known for his diligence, determination, and loyalty. In an empire that would later be characterized by ambition and infighting, Subutai stands out for having never sought personal power at the expense of his khan. His life represented the pinnacle of Mongol military glory, and despite being overlooked by western scholars for many years, he is now regarded as one of the greatest commanders in history.
