Profile

Matthias I (1443-1490), also known as "Matthias Corvinus", was one of Hungary's greatest kings. In addition to reigning as King of Hungary and Croatia from 1458 to 1490, he also claimed the thrones of the Kingdom of Bohemia and the Archduchy of Austria. Son of the national hero John Hunyadi, Matthias Corvinus was renowned for his political acumen, even-handedness, and martial talent. His political, judicial, and economic reforms centralized power in the kingdom and made the crown tremendously wealthy. Developing on the ideas of his father, Matthias used this wealth to build his famous Black Army, one of Europe's first standing armies. This extremely potent force turned Hungary into one of the greatest powers in Europe. He was perhaps better known, however, for both his patronage of learning and his own intellectual curiosity. Unlike other monarchs at the time, the well-read Matthias was eager to embrace the Renaissance ideas fomenting in Italy, sponsoring art, music, and academia. His personal library, the Bibliotheca Corviniana, became one of the most renowned libraries in all of Europe, attracting many scholars and artists to his court. His reign is regarded as the peak of the Hungarian golden age, and he remains a national hero to this day. The wise king "Matthias the Just" became the subject of folk tales, with the common folk mourning his death as "the loss of justice".
