Profile
The future Qin Shi Huang was born Ying Zheng (259-210 BCE), a prince of Qin. At the time of his birth, China was divided into seven warring kingdoms. Over the past century, a series of Legalist reforms, westward expansions, and military victories had transformed Qin from a rural backwater into the most powerful of the seven states.
In 246 BCE, at just 13 years old, Ying Zheng became King of Qin. True power lay in the hands of Chancellor Lü Buwei and the other regents, but by 235 Ying Zheng had managed to seize full control of the government. From 230 to 221, through cunning ploys and brilliant generalship, King Zheng successively conquered the states of Han, Zhao, Wei, Chu, Yan, and Qi. With the seven states finally united, Ying Zheng declared himself China's first emperor (huangdi), changing his name to Qin Shi Huangdi (First Emperor of Qin).
With the seven states unified, Qin Shi Huang went to work consolidating them into a single nation. Over the 500 years since the decline of the Zhou kings, China's already-fragmented institutions had drifted even further apart. With an iron fist, the new emperor centralized power, created a new administrative structure, and unified China's writing system, measurements, and laws. He connected the country with new canals and fortified it with new defensive works, the most notable of which was the first segment of the Great Wall. Though his dynasty would not long outlive him, Qin Shi Huang's unification of the states and his conception of a single China formed the basis of legitimacy for future Chinese dynasties.
Much of his later reign was dedicated to his pursuit of immortality, contracting scholars, magicians, and alchemists across China to find a solution. As evidenced by his death in 211 BCE, they failed. Even in death, the First Emperor was not one to be outdone. His massive mausoleum and the thousands of "Terracotta Warriors" contained within laid the foundation for the image of the Chinese emperor as a divine sovereign.
