Profile

Tokugawa Ieyasu (1543-1616) was a preeminent military leader and statesman during Japan's turbulent Sengoku period. With his strategic vision and steadfast character, he unified the fractious warring states of Japan under a single banner. As founder of the Tokugawa Shogunate and the last of Japan's Three Great Unifiers, he is remembered today as one of the single most important figures in Japanese history. In 1603, after defeating his greatest rivals at Sekigahara, Tokugawa Ieyasu officially received the title of shōgun, marking the beginning of the Edo period and the 265-year rule of the Tokugawa clan. The relative political stability he ushered in resulted in one of the most remarkable periods of cultural, economic, and intellectual development in Japanese history. During his reign, Ieyasu focused on domestic unification and integration. His groundbreaking reforms included strengthening central authority, creating new regulatory bodies, and bringing Japan's countless feudal lords to heel. After Tokugawa Ieyasu's death, he was given the posthumous title "Tōshō Daigongen", which translates into "Great Gongen (a syncretic Buddhist-Shinto deity), Light of the East". Several hundred Shinto shrines dedicated to him, known as "Tōshō-gu", were built over the course of the Edo period, with the most famous being the Nikkō Tōshō-gū in Toshigi Prefecture. Though his historical reputation took a hit after the Meiji Restoration, he remains one of the most revered figures in Japanese history.
