Profile

John Hunyadi was a prominent Hungarian commander and politician, best known for defending Hungary from an Ottoman invasion. Perhaps Hunyadi's most famous accomplishment was his defense of Belgrade. In 1453, the Ottoman Sultan Mehmed II completed his conquest of Constantinople, and soon after turned his sights onto the Balkans. In 1456, he brought his cannons to Belgrade, then a part of the Kingdom of Hungary, and laid siege to the city. Leading a motley crew of Hungarian soldiers and various other volunteers, Hunyadi forced the Ottomans to retreat. The victory at Belgrade was widely celebrated, and is believed to have temporarily halted the rapid expansion of the Ottoman Empire. During the siege, Pope Pius II ordered churches across Europe to ring their bells every day at noon, calling on Christendom to pray for the defenders of Belgrade. John Hunyadi died of an illness in 1456, less than a month after the end of the siege. He continues to be hailed as one of Hungary's greatest heroes to this day.
