Profile

Stephen III (1433-1504) was Voievod of Moldavia and one of its greatest rulers. Though surrounded on all sides by powerful and expansionist empires, he was able to defend his nation's independence. In 1457, he overthrew his uncle Peter III Aaron, beginning his 47-year reign. As ruler of Moldavia, he was forced to contend with three extremely powerful neighbors: the Ottoman Empire, the Kingdom of Hungary, and the Kingdom of Poland. He was able to defend Moldavian independence by playing these powers against one another, and also by sheer force of arms. His most celebrated victory came at the 1475 Battle of Vaslui, where he inflicted a decisive defeat on a much larger Ottoman army. Besides his military accomplishments, Stephen III was a devout adherent of the Romanian Orthodox Church, building many churches and monasteries across Moldavia that greatly contributed to its cultural, artistic, and literary heritage. It is little wonder that he is known as Ștefan cel Mare ("the Great").
