Profile

Philip II was king of ancient Macedon, reigning from 359 BCE to 336 BCE. Though he is sometimes overshadowed by the accomplishments of his son, Alexander the Great, Philip of Macedon was an accomplished conqueror and statesman in his own right. Through military reform, diplomacy, and sometimes brute force, Philip II transformed Macedon from the backwater of the ancient Hellenic world into its hegemon. On the military end, he is credited with developing the famed Macedonian phalanxes, equipping them with an ultra-long pike known as the "sarissa". On the diplomatic front, he expanded Macedonian influence through marriages, alliances, and diplomatic maneuvering. Philip's most famous battle was the 338 BCE Battle of Chaeronea, where he defeated the combined forces of Athens and Thebes, cementing Macedon as the dominant power in Greece. Shortly after his victory, Philip formed the League of Corinth, a federation of Greek city-states under his leadership. In 336 BCE, Philip II began a campaign against Persia. Before it could come to anything, however, he was assassinated at his daughter's wedding.
