Profile

Ragnar Lodbrok (also spelled "Lothbrok" or "loðbrók") was a 9th-century Viking warrior and leader. He lived a life of adventure, reaving a path of destruction through much of Europe and parts of North Africa. Though it is unclear how much of his life was historical fact, we do know that he was one of the most important heroes in the Northern European canon. He is best known for his conquests of England, leading his Viking fleet in several devastating raids of Anglo-Saxon coastal settlements. In 845, he captured and plundered the city of Paris, forcing King Charles the Bald of West Francia to pay a large ransom in exchange for peace. Ragnar's boldness, strategic vision, and ambition made him a symbol of the Viking Age and a paragon for the Vikings that came after. His expeditions brought great wealth to his homeland, greatly enhanced the prestige of the Vikings, and paved the way for future, even greater conquests. Even Ragnar's end was fittingly dramatic. One legend has it that, while leading a daring (or foolhardy) invasion of Northumbria with just two ships, Ragnar was captured and executed by King Ælla of Northumbria. Even after he died, the legend of Ragnar would be carried on by his many famous sons, like Björn Ironside, Ivar the Boneless, Halfdan Ragnarsson, and Sigurd Snake-in-the-Eye. In 865, Ragnar's sons led a massive invasion of England known as the "Great Heathen Army", where they extracted gruesome vengeance against King Ælla and carved a massive realm out of Northern and Eastern England. For his daring and wisdom, the story of Ragnar Lodbrok still captivates modern audiences around the world.
