Profile
Over the course of her remarkable life, Shajar al-Durr rose from a Mamluk slave to one of the few female rulers in Egyptian history. Shajar al-Durr began her rise to power as a slave of As-Salih Ayyub, who would later go on to marry her and become Sultan of Egypt. In 1249, her husband died while defending Egypt from the Seventh Crusade. To preserve stability and unity in the face of the invading Crusaders, Shajar al-Durr cleverly concealed her husband's death, issuing orders and commanding the army "in the name of the Sultan". With the help of her Mamluk allies, she defeated the Crusaders and ascended to the throne of Egypt, becoming Sultan in her own right. Besides defeating the Seventh Crusade, Shajar al-Durr's reign laid the foundation for Mamluk rule in Egypt, which would last for hundreds of years. The political and religious environment of the time, however, was not conducive to a female monarch, and her reign as Sultan only lasted for three months (though she married the new Sultan and remained an influential political figure). Nevertheless, her incredible journey from slave to Sultan, political acumen, and military talents have made her an icon of Egyptian history and a symbol of female empowerment.
