Profile

Belisarius was a Byzantine general in the service of Emperor Justinian I. Entering Justinian's service as the commander of his personal guard, he went on to win countless important victories for the Eastern Roman Empire. Belisarius's quelling of the Nika Riots of 532 helped consolidate Justinian's rule, and earned him the emperor's trust. He led successive campaigns against the Vandals and Ostrogoths, retaking much of Rome's former western territory. Belisarius became a symbol of Rome's enduring legacy, and his elite Bucellarii regiment became the stuff of legends. With his Bucellarii, Belisarius won impossible victory after impossible victory. His downfall would come not on the battlefield, but in the imperial court. Baseless accusations whispered by his rivals would poison his reputation with Justinian, and from then on Belisarius would never command another army. Belisarius's role in the restoration of Roman lands and his embodiment of the Roman spirit have earned him the nickname "Last of the Romans".
