Profile

Eleanor of Aquitaine (1122 - 1204) was one of the most powerful and influential women in European history. The consort of two kings and the mother of two more, many kings came and went over the course of her long life, but the power and influence of the Duchess of Aquitaine never wavered. Eleanor inherited the Duchy of Aquitaine at age 14, immediately putting her in control of nearly one third of the Kingdom of France. The crown was covetous of and threatened by her wealth, and she was quickly married off to King Louis VII of France. Eleanor found life at court (and her husband) tedious. Having failed to produce a male heir after 15 years, the marriage between Louis and Eleanor was annulled. Not long after the annulment, Eleanor married Henry Plantagenet, Count of Anjou. Together, the pair controlled most of France. When Henry became King of England, Eleanor was crowned as his Queen. Their marriage would produce three daughters and five sons, one of whom was the famed Richard the Lionheart. From childhood, Eleanor took an interest in many pursuits not common for women of her era, from literature and art to riding and hunting. She broke the mold for what it meant to be a woman, wife, and ruler in medieval Europe, even leading her own knights in the Second Crusade. Eleanor was imprisoned in England for over a decade for supporting her son's rebellion against her husband, though she was freed after Richard took the throne. She spent her later years arranging marriages for her children and quelling rebellions. She once crossed the Pyrenees, at nearly 80 years old, to secure a marriage for her granddaughter. Thanks to her tireless efforts, the majority of her children ended up in happy marriages, spreading the bloodline and earning her the nickname "the Grandmother of Europe". Whether as duchess, queen, or dowager, Eleanor of Aquitaine was a lily unlike any other; one that flourished in open fields rather than behind palace walls.
