Profile
Gonzalo Fernández de Córdoba (1453-1515), known by his nickname "El Gran Capitán", was a Spanish general and politician, as well as an enormously influential innovator in the field of warfare. He was one of the first European commanders to truly integrate firearms in his tactics, and his innovations can be said to mark the beginning of "modern warfare". His highly-organized pike-and-shot formations made Spain Europe's preeminent military power for over a century. Beyond his military achievements, he was also appointed Viceroy of Naples (at the time under Spanish rule) and inducted into the Order of Santiago.
