Profile

Lapulapu was the datu (chief) of Mactan Island, located in the Visayas archipelago in what is now the Philippines. When Ferdinand Magellan arrived in the region in 1521, Lapulapu refused to pay homage or tribute to the Spanish Empire or its local allies. On April 27, 1521, in response to this act of defiance, Magellan attacked Mactan with a force of 49 soldiers. Lapulapu fought back fiercely, defeating Magellan (who was slain in the battle) and driving the Spanish from the island. Lapulapu then left Mactan with his family and friends, thereafter disappearing from the history records. One local legend states that he actually turned into a stone on the shores of Mactan, and has been silently guarding the island ever since.
