Profile

The daughter of King Mattan I of Tyre, the Phoenician queen Dido was the mythical founder of Carthage. According to legend, after her brother Pygmalion succeeded to the throne of Tyre, he had Dido's husband murdered to secure his throne and seize her husband's vast wealth. To escape Pygmalion's tyranny, she fled Tyre with her loyal followers, sailing westward across the Mediterranean. Landing in North Africa, Dido asked the local Berber king Iarbas for a piece of land—only as much land as could be covered by a single oxhide. After the king agreed, Dido cut the oxhide into fine strips, using them to encircle a nearby hill, finding a new home for her and her followers. As more and more Berbers moved in, Dido gradually built her settlement into the wealthy and powerful city-state of Carthage. Located upon the naturally-defensible Hill of Byrsa and in control of the Mediterranean's major arteries, Carthage soon became a military and trade hub. Dido's wise governance only furthered the city's prosperity. According to some legends, Dido and the Trojan hero Aeneas met and fell in love. Supposedly, after the two were forced to part, the sorrowful queen took her own life after cursing Aeneas and his descendants, though as with most things regarding Dido there is little historical evidence of this. Another, older legend states that as Carthage became more powerful, King Iarbas demanded that Dido marry him, though Dido wished to remain loyal to her late first husband. After pretending to agree to his offer, Dido instead slew herself with her own sword, forever becoming a deified symbol among the Carthaginians for her act of self-sacrifice. Dido's extraordinary wisdom and leadership have continued to captivate later audiences, and have made her an enduring figure in classical art.
