Profile
Babur was the founder of the Mughal Empire. Born Mirza Zahir ud-Din Muhammad in the Fergana Valley, he was the eldest son of Umar Shaikh Mirza, the then ruler of Fergana, and a descendant of Timur, founder of the Timurid Empire.
In 1494, the 12-year-old Babur succeeded to the throne of Fergana, and soon had to defend it from ambitious relatives. Two years later, he conquered Samarkand, but in the process lost control of Fergana. For years, he tried repeatedly to gain control of both territories. Defeated by the Uzbek Khan Muhammad Shaybani in 1501, Babur ended up ruling over neither, and fled south. In 1504 he rallied the remainder of his forces and conquered Kabul. He then managed to regain control of Samarkand for a time, but was forced to abandon it due to both internal and external threats.
Having lost Samarkand again, Babur turned his attention to India. In 1526, he defeated and conquered the Delhi Sultanate at the First Battle of Panipat, marking the beginning of the Mughal Empire. Babur's innovative use of gunpowder was the decisive factor in his victory, and Mughal artillery would be the tool with which they would unite the subcontinent.
An avid writer and reader, Babur penned many poems, songs, and most notably his seminal memoir: the Baburnama. Babur died in 1530 and, in accordance with his wishes, was buried in Kabul.
