Profile
Starting from the late 1380s, Queen Margaret I reigned over the kingdoms of Denmark, Norway, and Sweden (including Finland at the time), and later united these possessions into the Kalmar Union. She is hailed as one of the most important figures of the Middle Ages and one of Europe's first and greatest queens regnant.
Margaret I was the youngest child of King Valdemar IV of Denmark, and later married King Haakon VI of Norway. After Valdemar's death, Margaret became the de facto regent of Denmark after her 5-year-old son Olaf II succeeded to the Danish throne. After Haakon VI's death, Olaf II inherited the Norwegian throne, making Margaret the de facto ruler of both Denmark and Norway. Her dual regency marked the beginning of a Danish-Norwegian union that would last for more than four centuries.
After the death of Olaf II, Margaret I became Queen of Denmark and Norway suo jure. Supported by the Swedish nobility, Margaret then invaded Sweden and conquered it from the unpopular King Albert. The united Denmark, Norway, and Sweden would become known as the Kalmar Union. To consolidate control, she declared her great-nephew Eric of Pomerania as her heir. With the backing of all three kingdoms' nobility, Eric was crowned as monarch of the Union while Margaret I remained its de facto ruler.
Margaret I died of illness in 1412. Her sarcophagus is located by the altar of the Roskilde Cathedral, and features a carved likeness of the Queen.
