Boudica was queen of an ancient Celtic tribe known as the Iceni.
After the death of her husband Prasutagus, the Romans plundered Iceni lands, levying heavy taxes, flogging Boudica and violating her daughters. Enraged by this injustice, Boudica led an army of British tribes in an uprising against the Roman Empire.
Boudica's army first headed toward Camulodunum (modern-day Colchester), where they defeated the weak Roman garrison and sacked the city, destroying a temple to the former Emperor Claudius. The Roman Ninth Legion attempted to save the city, but suffered an overwhelming defeat. Boudica's army slaughtered, sacrificed, and feasted among the ashes of the city they had conquered, proclaiming the beginning of her revenge against Rome.
