Profile
Bertrand du Guesclin was a distinguished commander on the French side during the Hundred Years' War between England and France, and experienced his first notable success by driving back the English encirclement with a mix of adroitly executed medieval guerrilla warfare tactics during the conflict in Brittany from 1341-1364. Bertrand's strong success against the English forces here provided a much-needed morale boost to the despondent French forces, and quickly elevated him in Prince Charles' eyes. Bertrand was later sent following the conclusion of this phase of the war to northern France to help resolve issues with mercenary groups and then proceeded to Castilla to help Henry of Trastámara ascend the throne. War between the French and English broke out once again in 1369, following which Bertrand was declared "Constable of France" by decree of Charles V, whereupon he launched a successful campaign at the Battle of Pontvallain that routed the nearby English army and which was itself followed in quick succession by the retaking of Poitou and Saintonge, driving the Black Prince out of French territory entirely. French forces under the "Constable" went on to repeated victories, thus recovering all the territories that had been ceded to England in the Treaty of Brétigny. Bertrand passed away from an illness at Châteauneuf-de-Randon during the campaign in Languedoc in 1380. The death of his outstanding general was a heavy blow to the French forces, particularly Charles V who took the step of honoring Bertrand with a place in the royal family's mausoleum at the Basilica of Saint-Denis.
