Profile

Amanitore was a Nubian queen regnant, or "Kandake" to the Grecians and Romans of that era, in the Kingdom of Kush during the Meroitic Period. Amanitore probably started ruling Kush around 1 BCE. Amanitore's reign stands out particularly for her kingdom's great architectural exploits during this period. For example, she organized the restoration of the Temple of Amon between Meroe and Napata, as well as a number of reservoirs for long-term water storage in Meroe during her reign. Three great achievements are ascribed by historians to Amanitore the Nubian Kandake: the first is that Amanitore took her kingdom to a much greater level of geopolitical and cultural independence out of Egypt's shadow, including the establishment of Kush's own writing system. Secondly, the archaeological record demonstrates the increasing sophistication of Kush's manufacturing during this period, particularly in regard to the mining and smelting of ores and metals. These technological improvements made Kush one of the ancient world's most important iron and smelting centers and gold production sites. Thirdly, Kush became a much more active diplomatic player in local geopolitical affairs during her time with more frequent interactions with the kings of Egypt, Rome, Greece, and Persia, and Amanitore also significantly strengthened the kingdom's trading routes with India and China. In addition, the "Nubian Pitati", a type of bowman, were thoroughly feared by other ancient armies of the time, particularly Ancient Egypt, and earned the kingdom the moniker "Land of the Bow". Strangely enough, these bowmen were also known to serve as mercenaries in Egypt's own armed forces for the promise of gold. This "army for hire" relationship between Nubian Pitati and the Egyptians, which might seem strange to our ears, may have been occurring as early as 2300 BCE.
