Profile
Moctezuma I, the second Aztec emperor and fifth king of Tenochtitlan, reigned from 1440 to 1469.
Moctezuma's reign is best remembered for two major accomplishments. The first was the consolidation of the Triple Alliance of the Aztecs, Texcoco and Tlacopan, allowing Moctezuma to carry out a large-scale expansion of Aztec territory. The second was the completion of a double-aqueduct pipe system for Tenochtitlan, which had a huge impact on famine, plague, and pollution for the city.
According to legend, the Aztec's ancestors, guided by the god Huitzilopochtli, left their original home of Aztlan, moving south to resettle near Lake Texcoco in the Anahuac valley. When they explored an island in the middle of the lake, they saw an eagle perched on a cactus, clutching a snake. Seeing it as an omen, they built Tenochtitlan on that very spot.
