Profile
Chandragupta Maurya, nicknamed Moon Guardian, was the founder of the Maurya Empire in India.
Records of Chandragupta's early life vary with each source. Sinhalese Buddhist texts claim that Maurya's father was killed in battle while he was still in his mother's womb. In 324 or 321 BCE, Maurya declared himself king, forming an army which he led to attack the Nanda Dynasty's capital city of Pataliputra. Maurya then went on to unify northern India, building a centralized state with a standing army of 600,000 infantry, cavalry, chariots, sailors, elephants, and logistics divisions. Legends claim that he later gave up his empire to become a Jainist monk, eventually dying by committing sallekhana, or fasting followed by self-immolation.
Maurya is said to have been taught and advised by Chanakya, an ancient Indian politician, philosopher and economist. Together they overthrew the Nanda Dynasty and founded the Maurya Empire. Chanakya is also known for writing "The Arthashastra", a treatise on statecraft, economic policy and military strategy.
