Profile
Yi Sun-sin was a famous military strategist, general, and hero of the people renowned in the history of the Korean peninsula. Yi worked alongside Admiral Won Gyun and Admiral Yi Eok-gi to beat back Japan's naval forces during the Japan's initial invasion of Korea in 1592 in four major engagements, earning a string of victories as exemplified by the Battle of Hansan Island. He had risen to the rank of 'Naval Commander of the Three Provinces' by 1593, but was subsequently relieved of command and arrested as a result of a plot to remove him involving a Japanese double agent in the Korean Royal Court. Yi was later freed and returned to the army as a common soldier. A terrible defeat at the hands of the Japanese navy in autumn of the same year saw Yi quickly restored to his former position whereupon he carried out a major restructuring of the navy and won a major victory in the Battle of Myeongnyang. Yi lost his life in the Battle Noryang Strait the following year, taking a stray arquebus bullet as the united Korean fleets worked to repel the Japanese armada. Yi is also known as a prolific author of many excellent poems in addition to his military accomplishments, the most famous of which is probably the 'The Song of Hansan Island', roughly translated to: "The autumn night darkens the sea on a kingdom of water. Wild geese fly high in the chill air. My worried heart keeps me from sleep as the moonlight illuminates my bow and sword."
