Profile

Guan Yu (ca. 160 – 220 CE), courtesy name Yunchang, was born during the late Han dynasty in what is now Shanxi Province. During the internecine conflict of the Three Kingdoms period, he became one of the most important generals in the service of Liu Bei of Shu Han, one of the era's main belligerents. With his sworn brother Zhang Fei, he was said to have been capable of fighting "ten thousand enemies". Hyperbole, perhaps, but a testament to his reputation for martial might. In Jian An 4 (199 CE), he was awarded the title "Marquis of Hanshou" by the Han emperor. After Liu Bei and his ally Sun Quan defeated Cao Cao at the 208 CE Battle of Red Cliffs, Guan Yu aided Liu Bei in mopping up the remnants of Cao Cao's forces in Jing Province. After Liu Bei began his campaign to conquer Yi Province, he left Guan Yu behind to defend Jing. By 219, Liu Bei had made considerable gains, and Guan Yu began his own offensive against Cao Cao. Attacking the fortress of Fancheng, he captured one of Cao Cao's top generals and executed another, though he failed to take the fortress. While Guan Yu was on campaign, however, Sun Quan betrayed his alliance with Liu Bei, and invaded the now lightly-defended Jing Province. Taken completely by surprise, Guan Yu rushed back to defend Jing, but was defeated, captured, and executed. Guan Yu's legacy after his death is perhaps even more remarkable than his life. For his loyalty and bravery, "Guan Gong" (Lord Guan) has been venerated as a god in various religious traditions throughout the ages, with his worship spreading abroad to Korea, Japan, Vietnam, and more. Daoism reveres him as "Holy Ruler Deity Guan", slayer of demons, whereas Chinese Buddhism considers him a Bodhisattva. Beyond religious veneration, later Chinese dynasties would heap posthumous honors upon him, granting him the same rank as Confucius.
