Thanks to his remarkably down-to-earth demeanor, almost no one was aware of Misfortis's true identity. To the world, he was simply a chubby mage, ever-inseparable from his golden toad, and was a hapless soul that fate had seen fit to knock flat on his back. Bad luck was his most faithful companion, and it had a talent for variety. On polished stone paths, a stray pebble would appear from nowhere to send him sprawling headfirst; when camping in the wilderness, while others dozed comfortably by the fire, a wandering boar would seek him out as if guided by instinct; even birds overhead seemed to take particular pleasure in targeting his head with their most fragrant "deliveries". And it was a case of "justice from above" that first brought Andy and Misfortis together. That day, a powerfully kicked ball flew across half the square, tracing a tricky arc in the air, and landing perfectly on the bridge of Misfortis's nose. You've got real talent... even a ball wants a piece of you." Andy walked over slowly, suppressing his apology and reaching instead for the sharp, cutting words he had heard from so many adults. He was a frail and rebellious child. The grown-ups, perpetually anxious about his delicate, porcelain body, had wrapped him in an overprotective grip so fierce it had long since taught him to greet the world with thorns. However, the fellow before him did not fly into a rage as other adults did. Misfortis rubbed his reddened nose while the golden toad on his head sighed and rolled its eyes. He cheerfully picked up the ball and patted his round belly. "You're right, you can see what kind of luck I've got! But this ball has a really nice bounce to it." Andy froze. He stared at the ridiculous sight for a moment, then cautiously asked after a pause: "Do you want to try kicking the ball? You might be... surprisingly good." "Sure!" And so the two of them, one stout and one slight, began to play on the grass at the edge of the plaza. Unsurprisingly, Misfortis's footwork was disastrous. The ball seemed to have a life of its own, bouncing inexplicably off his belly and face, or simply tripping him head over heels. Misfortis took it all in stride, treating each mishap like a circus act, rubbing his springy belly and cracking jokes about his own "terrible luck" until Andy was doubled over with laughter. That was the happiest Andy had ever laughed, the joy of it nearly tearing through the overcast skies that had loomed over his life for years. But pure happiness never lasts. A panicked couple found Andy, who was bent over catching his breath, pulled him into their arms like a priceless treasure, then rounded on Misfortis with open hostility. "Get lost, you jinx! How dare you get close to Andy! Keep your wretched luck away from our child!" "No... he didn't..." Andy desperately tried to explain, but his agitation triggered a violent coughing fit. The coughing became ironclad proof in his parents' eyes. Their bitter, venomous scolding gathered like dark clouds that obscured the hard-won ray of sunshine. Trapped helplessly in his parents' grip, Andy could only watch as his new friend dusted himself off and walked away without a word. Though strictly forbidden from going outside, and especially from going anywhere near Misfortis, Andy had never intended to comply. Besides, the unfortunate fellow was never difficult to find, as his whereabouts were all but announced by the sound of laughing crowds. A few days later, Andy found Misfortis by the fountain. His ankle was tangled in a kite string that had drifted from somewhere, and he was flailing like a penguin that had lost its footing, until he toppled into the pool with a tremendous splash. The onlookers dissolved into laughter, and Andy found himself unable to hold his back. He walked over and stretched out his hand to the soaking Misfortis, extending the invitation once more with a flutter of nerves. "Can we... still play together?" "Of course we can!" Misfortis swiped the water from his face as the golden toad on his head joined in by firing a little stream from its mouth. He never seemed to care what the world said about him, offering it only the most sincere smile he had. And so came their third secret meeting, and their fourth. "Thank you, Misfortis." Leaning against a tree to catch his breath after an exhausting run, Andy opened up for the very first time. "Adults are always afraid of my illness... and the other kids see me as a burden. You're the only one who's willing to be with me. Even when I can't keep running, you always find a way to make me smile." "It's nothing, little Andy. After all, you never turned your nose up at my terrible luck either—the sort that manages to fall into concealed holes on perfectly flat ground—did you? Misfortis chuckled and gave the golden toad next to him a gentle pat. It let out a "ribbit," as though chiming in. "And I know your body is going to keep getting healthier!" Misfortis said earnestly. Andy gave a bitter smile. "The doctors say I was born with it... it's written into my bones. There's no easy cure for something like that." "Oh, little Andy, don't look at it that way. Consider this, if someone like me exists in this world, a man so cursed he can choke on plain water, then what's so impossible about your sudden recovery?" Misfortis gave him a playful wink. Andy took it as just a comforting remark and didn't think much of it. But as time passed, he started noticing changes he could not explain. The same boy who used to gasp and cough after half an hour with a ball was now somehow able to race through the fields alongside Misfortis all afternoon long. When Andy excitedly ran to their usual spot, eager to share the miracle with his friend, he found Misfortis being chased around by a swarm of wild bees that had appeared from nowhere. It seemed the unlucky fellow's misfortune was only growing more dramatic by the day. "Maybe he's just having a particularly unlucky day!" Andy thought to himself, and then charged forward laughing, brandishing a tree branch to rescue his endlessly ill-fated friend. Soon it was time for Andy's follow-up at the hospital. The atmosphere at home on such days had always been suffocating and bleak. Yet this time, the old doctor clutched the report with trembling hands. "This is... a miracle! By the goddess Dura, Andy's illness is gone!" Andy was overjoyed. He pushed open the hospital doors and ran like the wind toward the grass where they often met, eager to share this miraculous good fortune with Misfortis. But the grass was empty. Only the golden toad remained, perched on the very pebble that had once tripped Misfortis, a rolled parchment letter held in its mouth. It watched Andy arrive breathless and sweating, and in its eyes was a gentle warmth. Andy took the letter with trembling hands. The paper was covered in Misfortis's crooked handwriting: "Little Andy, it fills me with joy to see you've grown into such a strong young man! I've gathered every last bit of your bad luck and taken it all with me. My bags are packed full, and now it's time to travel somewhere new and collect some more misfortune. Go make lots of new friends. Don't be afraid of falling, because I have already taken the most ridiculous tumble of all for you. Until we meet again, my dear friend." Andy stood in the brilliant sunshine, clutching the letter tightly in his hands as tears finally streamed down his face. The breeze moved gently through the air. With a soft "ribbit", the golden toad leaped away and disappeared far into the distance.
