"You always follow your heart, Antandra." As Antandra, battered and bruised, was escorted away from the Temple of the Seers by her former comrades, Numisu's final words echoed in her mind: "I hope you can bear the price." The price... Looking at the clear-eyed girl beside her, Antandra's mind flashed back to that moment. "Antandra, look ahead, something's not right!" Satrana's ears perked up, drawing Antandra's attention back to the present. Not long ago, as Antandra was mending her spear in the Quicksand Cavern, a child brought someone to her—someone whose face was both familiar and strange. "Antandra! Are you there?" Satrana, whom Antandra hadn't seen in years, suddenly barged right in. The young girl was almost an adult, and her voice carried joy and worry. Though she was happy to see Satrana, Antandra also knew there must be a reason for her arrival. It turned out that the Temple of the Seers had gotten news of a massive Hypogean invasion, and had deployed messengers to contact all of the tribes. Satrana had thought of Antandra first, and took it upon herself to brave the Land of the Exiles—but without waiting for approval from the witch doctors, of course. Hearing Satrana's news, Antandra said, "The Land of the Exiles is home to many innocent civilians. I must help them." Satrana replied without hesitation, "Of course. Then I'll go with you." Antandra and Satrana lurked around the edges of Saltwater to investigate, and sure enough, a group of shadowy figures was closing in on the town. "Hypogeans! We've got to evacuate the town!" As Antandra leaped to her feet, cries were already ringing out in the town. Antandra sprinted as fast as her feet would carry her, saving a little girl from the venomous claws of a Hypogean at the last second. As she gently wiped a spot of blood from the girl's cheek, a wave of deja vu washed over her mind. "Hold me tight and don't let go!" Antandra said to the girl. Assisted by Satrana and the dwarven Kadrin, Antandra managed to evacuate some of the town's residents, but there were simply too many Hypogeans. They seemed intent and focused on something, and although Antandra led the townsfolk in fleeing the Hypogeans non-stop, she couldn't manage to shake them off. The refugees were mostly children and elderly folk, both human and non-human. Antandra also stopped an elderly merchant who had almost entered Saltwater, unaware of the chaos inside. One young human suggested they seek refuge near the borders of the Empire, but the Hypogeans moved much faster than the refugees, so they'd be caught before they could arrive. "Where should we go?" Kadrin asked Antandra. The exiled warrior pondered as she surveyed the camp, seeing Satrana bandage the wounds of the rescued little girl. Satrana smoothed her ears back gently, a peaceful expression on her face. She never panicked, as long as Antandra was by her side. "I hope you can bear the price, Antandra." Numisu's voice sounded once more inside Antandra's mind. Strange birds let out hoarse caws before circling overhead toward the horizon. Beneath the setting sun huddled a group of dark and blurry figures; it was the Hypogean army camp—and they had a perfect view of Antandra's every move. "There's one more place, Satrana," Antandra said. "You mean... the Temple of the Seers? It is quite close..." "But the Elders would never violate their blood pact and let you enter the temple. You'd have to face all those Hypogeans on your own!" Satrana said. So that was her price to pay. Antandra nearly blurted it out, but managed to hold her tongue. She comforted Satrana until the red-eared young woman fell asleep on her shoulder. Kadrin was on night watch, but Antandra remained awake. It was as if she wanted to imprint the profound silence of those moments into her memory, as if that might somehow give her boundless energy. "Stop right there!" Antandra was jolted awake by Kadrin's bellowing roar. As it turned out, the human who had earlier proposed going to the border of the Empire was harboring a secret; he was a warrior of the Imperial House of Lanward. He had disguised himself as a refugee in order to transport a pair of Draconis Gem artifacts capable of resisting the Hypogeans and giving them to another member of his House—and that's why the Hypogeans were pursuing them so intently. Thus, Antandra was presented with another dilemma: she couldn't put the refugees' safety at risk, but at the same time, she couldn't let the powerful Draconis Gem artifacts fall into the hands of the Hypogeans. Antandra felt that this moment had come sooner than expected. She took Satrana's hand and told her and Kadrin to escort the refugees to the Temple of the Seers, while Antandra herself would work with the warrior of the House of Lanward to transport the Draconis Gem artifacts across the border. "You'll take care of the girl, right?" Antandra said to Satrana. The red-eared maiden's eyes welled with tears, but she held them back and nodded her head so emphatically that she didn't catch the rare flash of a smile from Antandra, a smile that came from pride, relief, and the final severing of a long-held attachment. The two seasoned warriors kept a quick pace, and before long, Antandra had led the Lanward warrior through the canyon leading to the Empire. And there, she could only stand firm to buy him time. The Hypogeans' ferocious attack came just as expected, and Antandra unleashed her fiercest battle cry to meet them head-on. She felt surprisingly calm, as if a burden had been lifted from her shoulders. Memories of her past flashed through her mind: choosing to become a temple warrior and abandon her worldly life, sheltering with Satrana and fighting with the elders, living in the Land of the Exiles and standing up against unjust violence—and finally, rescuing the Saltwater refugees and luring the Hypogeans here all alone... She'd followed her heart at every turn. Every decision had only brought her suffering and pain, but she never shied away from it. Perhaps she'd still not done enough, but Antandra was ready to pay the final price. "Now is not your time to fall, warrior." A crimson silhouette swept by. Hildwin, Elder of the Bloodridge tribe, had been disguised amongst the refugees as an elderly traveling merchant. While secretly watching over the Draconis Gem artifacts, he also noticed Antandra's selflessness and courage in protecting the refugees. Revealing himself now, he tossed out his Draconis Gem and granted Antandra the power of a Great Dragon. Imbued with this power, Antandra grew ever stronger, annihilating the Hypogean army in a matter of seconds. Antandra's mind was locked in a trance as fierce flames swirled wildly around her. In moments, she'd traversed both life and death. "What is this?" She asked Hildwin. "The Draconis Gem I gave you grants you the power of a Great Dragon. I recognize that you are a noble warrior, and I'm certain you'll put this power to good use." Hildwin explained. "Then... What do you want me to use the power for?" "Carry on exactly as you've done before. Protecting living beings from Hypogeans, fighting fearlessly as a warrior... In short, continue to follow your heart, as you always have." Hildwin replied. The flames were weightless, but Antandra felt something fall back onto her shoulders—something heavy and meaningful.
