Flickering torches faintly illuminated towering stone slabs. The horde of Arachin warriors, like a forest of swaying trees, were so densely packed that Safiya had no way to retreat. They pressed ever onward, forcing the queen of the Sphinxes to inch closer to the ominous meteorite before her. Suddenly, the heavy silence was broken by the sneering Ankhira. "Safiya, is this not your lauded Void Fragment? And look, it's all yours now!" The arrogant Arachin queen kept up her incessant goading, but Safiya just stared at the sinister Void Fragment in front of her, recalling how she'd been ensnared in the Arachin webs, deep within their nest. Back then, after being forced from the Sphinx throne by rebels, she'd panicked and fallen into the Arachin queen's lair. Safiya's clever rhetoric and natural eloquence had persuaded the queen to ally herself with her, and she managed to reclaim the throne with the help of her army. But that had also set the stage for her current situation... The Arachin queen's ambition had been awakened, and no longer was she content to remain in her caves. She led her Arachin army out into Sphinx territory, establishing themselves amongst them in the name of being an ally. At the time, the Sphinxes were recovering from all the chaos, and Safiya herself was busy cementing her renewed grip on power after executing all the rebel leaders. The Arachin queen seized this opportunity to send a huge contingent of warriors deep into the Sphinx domain, causing Safiya to feel threatened by her ostensible allies. Safiya has originally planned to slowly strip away the Arachin queen's influence and power, but an unexpected incident forced her hand early. A strangely shimmering meteorite had streaked across the night sky. Following a huge explosion, a fragment was found in Sphinx territory, glittering with terrifying brilliance. Safiya, having practiced the magic of the Void Realm for many years, identified it as a Void Fragment imbued with terrible Void power. But without waiting for Safiya to investigate, the unchecked Ankhira moved first. She had also sensed the importance of the Void Fragment, and sent soldiers to stand guard, allowing no one to access. Thus did Safiya reveal to Ankhira that the fragment contained the power of the Void Realm, and that if the Arachin queen controlled it, then she too would also gain mastery over its magic. Ankhira's power would make it easy to gain control of the fragment, after which nothing would be able to prevent her from ruling over all Maulers. It wasn't long before Ankhira informed Safiya of her intention to seize the power of the Void Fragment, and invited her to witness the event. When Safiya arrived with her escort, she fell into the Arachin queen's carefully laid trap. Hordes of Arachin warriors burst from the shadows and surrounded her. Even worse, her own escort turned against her, drawing their blades on their own queen. Ankhira hadn't blithely believed Safiya's words, and had always been wary of her ostensible ally. Safiya's unusual behavior aroused her suspicion, and she viewed her as no more than an ambitious politician. If the fragment really was as powerful as she had claimed, then she was certain Safiya would do anything to prevent her from obtaining it. Ankhira didn't rashly rush to touch the fragment herself, but had some of her Arachins try first. As expected, the second they touched it they were totally corrupted by its dark power, becoming mindless creatures. This convinced Ankhira that the so-called Void Fragment was a trap, and that Safiya's cordiality had been merely a ruse to leverage the power of the fragment to get rid of her. Information from her spies confirmed this—after all, spiders are the best at spinning webs, and she had long since bought off those Sphinxes who had secretly supported the uprising. Ankhira was furious at this. Determined to make her would-be murderers pay, she laid the trap and invited Safiya right in... "We could have shared the throne, Ankhira." The slight tremor in Safiya's voice only made Ankhira's laugh more imperious. "One throne cannot seat two queens." At Ankhira's nod, several Arachin warriors closed in further on Safiya, forcing her closer to the alien object. "You're too impatient, Safiya. I may well have fallen for your trap, if you hadn't been so eager for me to touch the Void Fragment." "You erred in sparing the lives of those fools. Did you really think they'd stay loyal to you?" "Enough. No more delay. Go now, go and receive power enough to rule the Maulers, Safiya!" It was impossible for Safiya to refuse Ankhira's 'invitation'; she had no choice but to touch the fragment and its terrible power. Ankhira couldn't hide her joy at every step Safiya took, convinced by the fate of the corrupted Arachins that she too would be consumed by the darkness. This was her golden opportunity to seize control and rule over the Sphinxes. In the instant that Safiya touched the fragment, a shockwave generated by the huge explosion of pure power hit everyone present. Light burst forth and surrounded Safiya, whose expression was cryptic but calm, a sly smile creeping around the corners of her mouth. The sheer power being released from the Void Realm made her shriek in agony, yet even so, she seemed to be laughing amongst the screams. In a heartbeat, she had vanished into the darkness and the vast space fell silent, as if nothing had just happened. "Now the Sphinxes have a new queen!" Ankhira spared no thought for Safiya's disappearance. She wasted no time in ordering the Arachin army to seize total control over the Sphinxes, as their dominion over this foreign tribe was within sight. Her joy, however, was short-lived. The fragment began to shake violently and countless cracks appeared on its surface, from which blood-red light gushed forth to dye the night sky scarlet. Ankhira's quick instincts drove her to hide behind some boulders, away from the light, as those caught in its brilliance were reduced to ashes in an instant. "Oh, how splendid the forbidden power is." Safiya reappeared like a faint star in the night sky, enveloped in blazing flames of darkness and with a thunderous unfurling of her wings. Ankhira's eyes widened in disbelief. She didn't know what kind of power it was that could instantly annihilate the army she was so proud of, and return her vanquished enemy to stand before her once again. All she knew was that she had to get out of there. "Safiya... how...?" "I never lied to you, my dear, dear ally." The fragment really did contain the power of the Void Realm, as Safiya had claimed. When she became aware of its existence, she knew at once that she had to have it, as its tremendous power could tip the balance in her favor against her duplicitous ally Ankhira. But if her intentions had been discovered, she knew she'd never be allowed to succeed. Thus had she perversely recommended the Void Fragment to Ankhira, knowing that it would plant a seed of doubt in her heart. Safiya had even orchestrated the leaking of information. She had deliberately not eradicated all those who had supported the rebels, in the knowledge that they could be manipulated to serve a particular purpose—like passing on misinformation, for example. All the vulnerability and weakness Safiya had hitherto displayed was solely to mislead Ankhira, and enable her to easily reach the Void Fragment. She understood her ally's character, how Ankhira would always fight an eye for an eye. All the Arachin queen needed was the right opportunity, and she could be counted on to use the fragment to seek vengeance on the queen of the Sphinxes. "How the tables have turned." Safiya led the Sphinxes in driving out the remaining Arachins from their territory, winning unprecedented support and trust from the tribe in the process. But securing her throne was not enough for Safiya. Despite having gained phenomenal strength, experiencing such suspicion and betrayal had engendered within her an even greater desire for power. Sooner or later, she would hold sway over all Maulers. After all, for someone of such ambition, this was just her opening move in the game of absolute dominion.
