One afternoon, a curiously dressed musician showed up at my door, hoping I would give my stamp of approval. His name was Lavatune, and he had made a name for himself in the small local taverns in Oakenfell. Now that he had a cult following, he wanted to make his presence known on a bigger stage. I turned down his request to perform on the spot for me because, to be honest, I wasn't interested in the type of music he played. As a well-known critic, all I had to do was scribble a few words, and I could make or break someone's career. It didn't matter if I'd never actually heard them perform before. My "impartial" reviews carried a lot of weight in these parts. To me, there was no sweeter melody than the clink of coins. Having a loyal following meant he had value I could exploit. With little fanfare, we signed a contract. My endorsement would bring him more fans, and he would have to do shows at my request. The contract seemed standard, but between all the dense clauses was the trap I had carefully designed for him. If he slipped up during a performance, he would owe me a ridiculous amount of money and be at my mercy for the rest of his life. "The poor kid has no idea what he's got himself into," I thought. Lavatune's first show was at a small concert hall I arranged for him. Before he took the stage, I had already planted my men in the audience. Their job was to cause a scene and have Lavatune screw up—just like I had done to countless other musicians. Meanwhile, I could just relax at home and wait for him to breach his contract. When he showed up crying and begging for mercy, I would make him my personal money-making tool like all the others. However, to my surprise, Lavatune's performance went off without a hitch. My men somehow forgot my orders and became among his followers. This made me uneasy. Things were getting out of my control. According to our deal, Lavatune would perform at a bigger venue soon. This time, I decided I would be there in person to see what kind of magic he had up his sleeve. The day of the show, I told my entourage to be ready. As soon as the music started, my men would mess up his performance. I kept the contract close at hand—the second he slipped up, I would declare his breach of contract and claim him as my own. Showtime approached. The lights dimmed, leaving Lavatune's sly expression faintly lit on stage. I could not wait to see the shock on his face. "Let the show begin!" Lavatune stood center stage, unleashing a heavy, resonating sound from a four-stringed instrument. I signaled my men to make their move, but they just stared blankly. All of a sudden, a bizarre fervor took hold, and they started convulsing uncontrollably. Lavatune began to play more intensely. Each note felt like a razor blade, piercing my eardrums and stabbing my soul. I watched the crowd get almost hypnotized by the music, swaying to the sounds. As the notes clashed and collided, the air began to smell like sulfur. Try as I may, I couldn't resist the surreal music, like invisible hands clawing at my soul. Lavatune's music grew frenzied and wild. The piercing strings sounded like wails from the netherworld. The audience's eyes flashed with madness, full of zeal and worship, fully converted to his cause. They chanted his name. The cacophony weaved with the music into some kind of freakish symphony. Suddenly, the music stopped, and the whole hall fell silent. Everyone's eyes turned to me, cold and emotionless. Lavatune stood center stage, a crazed glint in his eyes as if he could see right through me. His hair turned an eerie crimson, and gnarly horns twisted out from underneath. "Welcome, critic," Lavatune's voice boomed as if from the abyss itself. "You thought you were the master of this game, but in truth, you were just my pawn." I could not believe that the man I had signed a contract with was a real Hypogean! Dizzy and desperate, I tried to escape, but it was hopeless. Lavatune's music swelled again, even stronger than before. The crowd's eyes blazed with fervor as if beholding their deity. The jarring sounds made my body lose control as if invisible strings were being attached. "Do you wish to break our arrangement?" the Hypogean's whisper was followed by an evil laugh. I felt a searing heat in my chest. The contract in my hand burned to ash, but the words were etched into my flesh. There was no breaking free from the Hypogean's hold. The contract bound me to keep bringing him fresh souls until I died. However, I couldn't accept defeat. For someone like me who got off on controlling others, becoming a slave was a fate worse than death. With my final ounce of will, I tried to draw my dagger and aim it at my heart. In the end, Lavatune got what he wanted, and I will continue booking shows for him... forever.
