Wak Chanil Ajaw, whose name literally translates into "Lady Six Sky", was an influential ruler of the Maya city-state Naranjo ("Wak Kab'nal" in Mayan) in the 7th century CE. She was born in the city-state of Dos Pilas (its Mayan name is unknown, but it used the emblem glyph "Mutal", the same as Tikal), a daughter of its king. Though originally an outpost of Tikal, Dos Pilas had secured its independence from Tikal and sought to build a coalition against it. Wak Chanil Ajaw was sent to Naranjo as part of a political marriage to secure its support. The throne of Naranjo lay empty at the time and the city was in decline, and thus Wak Chanil Ajaw was given the additional task of establishing a new royal bloodline there and restoring the city's prominence. Though her sons would hold the actual title of "king", Wak Chanil Ajaw governed the city as regent. Thanks to her political, military, and administrative acumen, Naranjo re-emerged as a regional power. Known most for her military achievements, Wak Chanil Ajaw launched a series of wars and raids that expanded the borders and influence of Naranjo. She also seems to have contributed to Maya timekeeping, an important contribution for a culture that placed immense, virtually theological importance in time and dates. Wak Chanil Ajaw is now remembered as one of the most remarkable and powerful female rulers in Maya history, who brought glory and prosperity to Naranjo.
