Profile
Siyaj K'ak' (Mayan for "Fire is Born") is generally (but not universally) believed to have come from the city-state of Teotihuacan. Located in Central Mexico, near modern-day Mexico City, Teotihuacan was one of the most powerful states in Mesoamerica at the time. Much like Teotihuacan itself, however, the specifics of his background are difficult to confirm with the sources we have available. Based on his later achievements, he likely received some sort of training, becoming a proficient tactician and diplomat. Serving in the army of a Teotihuacano king known only as "Spearthrower Owl" (a literal description of his name glyph, which consists of an owl holding an atlatl), he rose quickly through the ranks. He seems to have earned the king's trust, as he was entrusted with the task of expanding Teotihuacan's influence southwards. In 378 CE, he led an army to the lowland Maya city of Tikal (located in modern-day Guatemala). The king of Tikal died the day Siyaj K'ak' arrived, after which he installed Yax Nuun Ahiin, a son of Spearthrower Owl, as king. Serving as regent of Tikal and an important regional warlord, Siyaj K'ak' reshaped the political landscape of the area and brought in Teotihuacan culture. Siyaj K'ak's rule over Tikal marks the start of rapidly-expanding Central Mexican influence on lowland Maya art and architecture, which can still be observed in many surviving Maya ruins. Though he never formally ruled Tikal, he remained an extremely influential figure in the region until his death some time in the fifth century.
