The summers on Dragon Isle are always long and blinding. On the training grounds of the Luminscale tribe, sunlight reflects off golden dragon scales, creating a mesmerizing halo. It is a symbol of glory and the embodiment of justice. Except for Odysseus. He stood in the shadow of a massive stone pillar, wiping down his practice sword. As the illegitimate son of the former clan leader and a convicted criminal, his scales had a dull copper hue, making him stand out awkwardly among the brilliantly radiant golden-scaled youths. "Your stance is wrong, Odysseus." The speaker was the eldest son of the family, Aequilus. He stood in the center of the field, the blade in his hand as steady as the beam of a balance scale. "You strike too quickly," Aequilus said with an authority beyond his years. "Judgment demands restraint and control. Before a verdict is passed, we cannot deny the accused the right of defense." Odysseus stepped out of the shadows, squinting at his elder brother. "What if it's a vicious beast ravaging the borderlands?" Odysseus countered. "Should I also read it its rights before deciding whether to pierce its heart?" "The law distinguishes us from beasts," Aequilus's answer was textbook perfect. "But beasts don't care about laws," Odysseus sheathed his sword. "While you're still flipping through legal texts looking for statutes, it has already torn out an innocent's throat... Aequilus, sometimes results matter more than procedure." Aequilus frowned, unable to hide his disappointment. "Without procedure, justice becomes tyranny. Odysseus, the rage burning in your heart will eventually consume the very path beneath your feet." Their repeated ideological differences had never led them to anticipate that these disagreements would eventually widen into an unbridgeable chasm, pushing them onto separate, unfamiliar paths. Years are enough to transform a youth's passionate vigor into the cold reality of adulthood. Aequilus at last donned the robes that symbolized the inquisitor, and every strike of his gavel echoed with the authority of the Luminscale tribe. Odysseus, constrained by his birth, could only assist his brother by handling investigations that were better left unmentioned in public. They maintained a delicate balance until a case known as "Black Tide" surfaced. Following leads through the black market, Odysseus uncovered a horrifying fact: a batch of forbidden poison capable of eroding dragon scales was steadily flowing into the Dragon Isle under the protection of a Luminscale elder from a collateral branch. The conclusive evidence was a bloodstained black ledger that Odysseus had seized after severely torturing a contact. "Seal the port immediately and arrest the elder!" Odysseus slammed the ledger onto Aequilus's desk, seething with rage. Aequilus flipped through the ledger, his brow furrowed. "This ledger was obtained illegally and cannot be admitted as evidence in court. If we make an arrest now, the council will dismiss the case on procedural grounds, and might even accuse us of framing our own kin." "Then what will you do?" Odysseus asked, suppressing his anger. "I will request an inspection warrant and gather the evidence anew. We need a complete and lawful chain of proof," Aequilus analyzed calmly. "This will take time... about a month." "A month?" Odysseus let out a cold laugh. "Do you know how much poison will flow into Dragon Isle in that month? How many hatchlings will suffer scale rot from accidental ingestion? To preserve your flawless procedural justice, must the innocent bleed?" "Odysseus!" Aequilus rose to his feet in anger. "We are inquisitors, not vigilantes! Once we cross that line, even in the name of justice, we become no different from criminals!" "Since you're so concerned about keeping your hands clean, let me be the dirty blade." Odysseus stormed out in fury. On a stormy night at the harbor, while Aequilus's inspection warrant was still making its way through layers of bureaucratic approval, the transaction had already begun. The Elder stood at the dock, directing his subordinates to move crates of poison, emitting an eerie green glow. Odysseus was alone, clad in black armor bearing no family crest, as he leapt from the top of the dock. He gave no warning and read no charges. He simply began his slaughter. His blade hummed with high-frequency kinetic energy, and with every swing, a criminal fell. Blood mixed with the rain, staining the dock a glaring crimson. By the time Aequilus hurriedly arrived with his guards, everything was over. The elder sat slumped on the ground, pointing in terror at the figure standing in the rain, while Odysseus's blade tip was just an inch from the elder's throat. "Stop!" Aequilus shouted in the rain. Odysseus turned his head. Rain ran down his helmet, his eyes as lifeless as a stagnant pool. "I've destroyed the poison, and the trafficking network list is in his pocket," Odysseus's voice cut through the rain. "This is the outcome, Aequilus." "You... do you realize what you've done?" Aequilus stared at the bodies strewn across the ground, his fingers trembling. "I saved Dragon Isle." Odysseus slowly raised both hands in surrender. "Now, you can uphold your laws." The doors of the Tribunal were tightly shut as a closed internal trial was about to begin. Odysseus had removed his armor, revealing a body covered in scars, as he knelt in the court. "Odysseus." Aequilus's voice echoed through the empty hall, edged with a faint rasp. "You stand accused of vigilantism, the slaughter of your own kin, and violation of the clan's Iron Law. ... How do you plead?" "I admit I killed them," Odysseus lifted his head and met his brother's gaze on the dais. "But I am not guilty." An uproar rippled through the council of elders. "If I hadn't acted, those poisons would have spread throughout the island tonight. Your so-called laws wouldn't have saved anyone at that moment," Odysseus said coldly. "Enough." Aequilus interrupted him, bringing down the gavel with a heavy thud that echoed through the hall. The hall fell into dead silence. Aequilus stood up, looking at his brother kneeling before him. He knew the elders wanted this "uncontrollable madman" executed, not merely for the killings, but because he had exposed the festering wounds within the clan. Aequilus had to make a choice. Should he execute him for the sake of "greater good," or bend the law to spare him? "In the name of the inquisitor, I pronounce—" No, there was another option. One more painful than death, yet one that would let him live. "Odysseus is stripped of the name Luminscale." Aequilus's voice turned ice-cold. "From this moment, you are expunged from the family lineage... You will bear none of its honor, nor claim its protection." Odysseus's pupils contracted slightly. He looked at Aequilus, and in those emotionless eyes, he understood the cruelty disguised as "protection." With his own hands, his brother killed Odysseus of the Luminscale tribe. His name would be erased, as though he had never existed. Only then could the council no longer hold a "dead man" accountable. "Furthermore," each word of Aequilus's sentence fell like a blade, "you are exiled to the subterranean reaches of Dragon Isle, never again to set foot in the light." Odysseus stood silent for a long while. At last, he slowly bent at the waist and offered the dais his final, perfectly formal tribal salute. "I... accept responsibility." In the most chaotic and lawless depths of Dragon Isle, Odysseus had long grown accustomed to solitude. Until that night, when a messenger found him. "Evil always festers where sunlight cannot reach." The messenger handed him a brand-new set of armor, entirely dark gold. "The Luminscale tribe needs inquisitors of light, but Dragon Isle... needs a cleaner." Odysseus caressed the cold armor, perhaps an arrangement tacitly approved by Aequilus. Light and shadow have always coexisted. Those who uphold order in the light maintain appearances, while someone must stand in the muck, dealing with the filth the law cannot define. He donned the armor, and from that moment on, there was no longer an "Odysseus." In his place was only a phantom roaming the dark side of Dragon Isle, a legend that struck fear into criminals' hearts. He no longer sought understanding or recognition. With the most ruthless methods, he would protect the very world that had cast him out. Young inquisitor Haelia stood in a dim alley, dispatched by her father Aequilus to investigate the theft of Dragon Isle's defense blueprints. The scene had already been cleaned up. The thief lay dead on the ground with a clean, precise fatal wound. The missing blueprints were neatly placed on a wooden box nearby, with a dark gold dragon scale pressed on top of them. Haelia picked up the dragon scale, and a familiar yet strange surge of power washed over her. She hurried home and handed it to her father, who had long since retired from the public eye. Aequilus sat before the fireplace, the flames casting flickering light across his streaked temples. He took the scale in hand, fingers tracing its rough surface for a long moment, and in his eyes appeared a grief Haelia had never seen before. "Father..." Haelia asked, "This approach doesn't conform to our laws, but he seems to be... helping us." Aequilus remained silent for a long time, clutching the scale tightly in his palm. "Haelia, you must remember this." Aequilus gazed into the deep night beyond the window and spoke softly. "The law is a wall we've built, with light within. But beyond the wall, in that darkness where even we dare not tread... he continues to fight." "Who is he?" "You need not know his identity. He bears the sins we refuse to acknowledge, yet watches over the dawn for us all."
