The night wind sighed through the cocoon hive, stirring the vines with a gentle rustle. Within its ring-shaped hall of woven tendrils, glowing leaves bathed the young broodlings in dim light as they gathered around Tithia. "Has anyone from our tribe..." one child asked, eyes wide with wonder, "ever gone beyond the hive?" Another piped up right after: "I heard the outside is dangerous! That's why we always hide in here... is it true?" Tithia's smile lingered on their eager little faces. "We rarely leave the hive. The outside is filled with dangers we do not know. Here, we are safe." She pointed toward the braided canopy above them. "The Broodmother gave us this home, a great cocoon spun of vines and branches." "And so, generation after generation, we've hidden within, untouched by the world's quarrels..." Her voice grew solemn. "Until one day, he chose to step beyond." The vines whispered overhead. Tithia drew back from her thoughts and met the children's shining eyes. "Shall I tell you his story?" Cheers and laughter filled the hall as they pressed closer. She nodded slowly and began to recall the legend time had nearly buried. Long ago, the Hypogeans fell upon the world, bringing ruin and despair. Only the Dark Forest, shielded by nature itself, escaped the first waves of war. Yet even within the cocooned hive, the Brood could feel the smoke and blood that hung in the air. From the forest's edge came distant roars, a grim reminder of the world's suffering. At the hive's heart, the Broodmother sat upon her living throne of woven branches, addressing the armored riders who stood before her. "Beyond this cocoon, all is but dust." Since the hive's founding, there had always been knights. Each was sworn as the Broodmother's own, leading squadrons of riders to guard the hive's borders, to repel intruders, and to uphold one creed above all: never meddle in the world beyond, and never set foot outside. Gorok, a knight among them, bowed his head in silence. He had always abided by that creed. Around him, others muttered in agreement. Holding the hive's borders was their sacred duty and the outside world's tragedies were not theirs to bear. But the echo of war beyond the vines gnawed at Gorok's heart. A thought took root: if the Hypogeans claimed the world outside, how could the hive remain untouched? If their armies reached the Dark Forest's borders, could the hive still endure? After a long silence, Gorok knelt low before the Broodmother. "Grant me leave to lead our riders into battle. Let us aid those beyond." Her brow furrowed as she gazed upon him. "You know this well... Leaving the hive is breaking the vow. We do not meddle." He raised his head, eyes unwavering. "This hive is our home, yes. But if the world falls, then so will we. To guard the hive means more than standing watch at its walls. It means acting before doom arrives." The Broodmother's lips parted in a sigh. At last, she nodded. "If your resolve is firm, then go. May you not bring shame to the name of the Broodknights." As Gorok stepped onto the battlefield, the truth struck him—the war was far more savage than he had imagined. The land lay in ruin, villages burned to ash. Yet the humans who lived there fought on, defiant against the Hypogeans. Even with nothing left to lose, they stood their ground, bleeding and unbroken. They were not kin of the Wilders, nor had they ever met the Brood before. But their resolve and courage stirred Gorok's heart. Time and again, he led his riders into the fray, breaking the Hypogean ranks to grant strangers a chance to survive. In one clash at the edge of the Dark Forest, a group were cornered by Hypogeans, helpless against the onslaught. Among them was a young girl—Tithia. "It was then that I first saw him," Tithia's voice faltered, trembling with reverence. "He came riding a massive war-beast, descending like black lightning into the horde. With his blade he cut away the darkness, shielding those of us who couldn't fight back. That day, he saved countless lives... mine among them." No one knew how long the battle dragged on, but Gorok and his riders, with their allies at their side, were hemmed in by Hypogeans among the fiery ruins of a stronghold. As darkness closed in and slaughter spread, Gorok realized that if they failed to hold the line, these human homes would fall and soon after, the Dark Forest would be crushed beneath Hypogean heels. He laid a steady hand on the carapace of his war-beast, Horn Beetle, his voice low and resolute. "Horn Beetle... one last charge." With a mighty roar, Horn Beetle surged forward. Gorok struck like a stormwind, his blade driving through the enemy commander while the beast's horns tore open the horde, carving a bloody path through the flood of Hypogeans. Inspired by the sight, the allied warriors raised their voices in a fierce cry and followed the riders' lead. Together they stormed from the ruins, driving the enemy back step by step. When dawn's light touched the earth, the battlefield lay silent at last. They had won. Afterward, Gorok led his riders back to the cocoon hive. Crossing the familiar mesh of woven vines, he was struck by a strange, hazy memory. Once, he'd believed that only dust lay beyond the cocoon, and that the hive's peace should remain untouched by the world's turmoil. Now he knew the truth: those who fought and bled on scorched ground, those who had stood beside him against the Hypogeans—they too were allies of the hive. He knelt before the Broodmother and spoke of the war beyond. She listened in silence, then softly asked, "And what lies outside the cocoon?" "The world beyond has not decayed, and the hive cannot remain apart," Gorok answered, bowing low. "If danger rises again, I will step beyond these walls once more." The Broodmother smiled faintly. "Your stubbornness is as strong as ever." He gripped his halberd tight, voice firm. "To guard the hive, to protect our kin... that is the true duty of a Broodknight. If that means being stubborn, so be it." "...And so that is Gorok's story." Tithia's voice fell quiet. The children gazed at her, their eyes full of wonder. "Then... where is he now?" one of them whispered. Tithia lifted her gaze to the night sky, a wistful smile flickering in her eyes. "He's still with us, watching over the hive, watching over us all."
