Late at night, Haelia sat alone at the long table, flipping through records tied to the Cloudpiercer tribe's rebellion. Flickering candlelight danced across her weary face, yet she hadn't slept in days. As the flame wavered, a shadow stirred. A figure knelt on one knee, stepping just far enough into the light to hand her a set of scrolls. "Master, these are the complete records of the Cloudpiercer tribe's destruction. I brought them all." Half-hidden in the darkness, the speaker remained respectfully bowed, never lifting his head. "Thank you, Umbriel. How many times must I tell you, there's no need to call me 'Master' when it's just the two of us." Haelia took the scrolls and returned to her research, eyes scanning the texts with quiet determination. Time passed. Eventually, Umbriel lifted his head slightly and looked at her. As he watched her in silence, memories of the first time they met rose unbidden. It was shortly after Haelia had been named a candidate for the role of Inquisitor. Her father had brought Umbriel before her. "Body cloaked in shadow, heart sworn to Flame—my life for my master's. I am Umbriel." He had knelt then, too, voice steady and clear. Haelia, seeing the boy was about her age, had been momentarily puzzled. Her father calmly explained everything to her. As a chosen candidate of the Luminscale tribe, she was to be assigned an Ashlight Sentinel from the Luminscale bloodline, a lifelong bond forged in duty and sacrifice. Umbriel was that chosen protector. Umbriel hailed from the Darkscales, a branch of the Luminscale tribe trained from childhood in combat and obedience. After enduring brutal trials, each was bound to a prospective Inquisitor, becoming their personal sentinel. It wasn't a job for the faint of heart. Enemies with old scores to settle were everywhere, but Umbriel always handled threats swiftly, often before Haelia even realized there was any danger. The Ashlight Sentinels called their protectees "Master." To them, they were servants in the shadows. But Haelia had always treated Umbriel as a friend. She told him many times to just call her by name. He never agreed. Never once did he say her name aloud. To Umbriel, Haelia was always the perfect candidate. She was disciplined, rule-abiding, tirelessly studying law, never stepping out of line. But that all changed the day a young Draconian called Skylan appeared. Umbriel had distrusted him from the start. Skylan constantly pulled Haelia away on wild adventures, filling her head with reckless ideas. But shadows don't speak. As a sentinel, Umbriel had no say in his master's decisions. He could only watch and follow. He noticed that whenever Haelia was with Skylan, she seemed brighter—laughing, talking endlessly, alive in a way he'd never seen. A strange feeling rose inside him, but he pushed it down. He returned to the shadows, fulfilling his role: to guard, unseen and silent. Years passed. Haelia came of age and rose quickly through the ranks of Dragon Isle's judiciary. When her father retired, she took up the mantle of Chief Inquisitor without contest. The world around her kept changing. But two things never did: the loyal guardian in the shadows and the boy from her youth, Skylan. By then, Skylan had become the youngest elder of the Cloudpiercer tribe. Busy though he was, he stayed close with Haelia. Umbriel never let down his guard. It was during this time that he noticed Skylan's strange behaviors. For the first time ever, Umbriel disobeyed. Without orders, without permission, he investigated Skylan and found traces of betrayal. But he said nothing. Maybe it was his training. Maybe he just didn't know how to tell her. Soon after, Skylan sided with the Graveborns and turned against the Draconis faction. Haelia, devastated, couldn't understand how her dearest friend had betrayed them all. Umbriel was consumed with guilt. If he had spoken up, maybe she would have seen through the lies. Maybe she wouldn't be carrying this unbearable grief. The night dragged on. At last, exhaustion overtook Haelia, and she slumped forward asleep at the table. Her cloak slipped to the floor. The candle guttered, then died, plunging the room into darkness and breaking Umbriel from his thoughts. He didn't pick up the cloak. Didn't move to cover her. Like a true shadow, he vanished into the dark with the last flicker of the flame. At dawn, Haelia would depart for the continent of Hathor to uncover the truth behind the rebellion. And Umbriel, as always, would follow in silence, unseen, unshakable.
