By her sixth year at the Violet Orphanage, Mira could barely recall what her old home looked like. When she first arrived, everyone told her that Violet Manor was a sanctuary for children with nowhere else to go. It had beautiful gardens, kind caretakers, and friendly playmates. At dinner, everyone would gather around the long table, sharing meals and whispering hopes for the future. Back then, Mira naively believed this was the home she'd always dreamed of. But the truth was far darker. Beneath its warm surface, the orphanage hid a chilling reality. The "garden" was a training ground for children with unusual abilities; the "kind caretakers" were agents following the orders of shadowy figures; and the "friendly playmates" lived by the law of the jungle, clawing for survival. Mira quickly became one of the weak, a target for the stronger children. She had no special power, only an ancient mirror left by her mother—a family heirloom said to connect the living with the world of the dead. The only person who showed her kindness was Number 095, though Mira preferred to call her Isabella. Isabella taught Mira how to tap into the power of the Graveborn world and helped her escape when the others turned on her. Even when Mira failed to hear the whispers of the Graveborns, Isabella would reassure her, telling her to take her time. Sometimes, they talked about the past. When Isabella spoke of her sister, Mira couldn't help but feel a pang of envy. The warmth of a family felt beyond her grasp, a feeling she could barely imagine. Isabella, though, was certain her sister would come for her one day and take her away from this nightmare. Mira could only dream about that day, wondering if she, too, might one day find a place in such a loving family. But everything changed when an explosion tore through Violet Manor, reducing it to rubble. In the chaos, Mira was separated from Isabella. As her mother's mirror crashed to the ground, cracks webbed across its surface, and a suffocating wave of darkness overwhelmed her. It was then that the whispers of the Graveborns finally reached her, and the realm of death claimed her as its own. But when Mira emerged from the ruins, she caught a glimpse of herself in the mirror. Her hair was pale, her skin ghostly, and her eyes hollow. She was no longer human. At first, she relished in her newfound freedom, wandering through the ruins and into the world beyond, searching for any trace of Isabella. But when she reached the nearest town, the people recoiled in horror. "A Graveborn! How did it get here?!" "Alert the Temple of Light!" Their screams and panicked cries were a harsh reminder that she didn't belong among them. Mira fled, biting her lip to hold back tears. Though she had escaped the prison of Violet Manor, she was still trapped—this time by her own isolation. Her mother's mirror had brought her back, but it couldn't give her a home or a place where she belonged. It wasn't long before the forces behind the Violet Orphanage found her. Even in ruins, the organization was still active, and Mira now had to evade both the Temple of Light and her past tormentors. She soon realized that the very mirror that made her a Graveborn could also reveal her deepest desires, letting her appear human again. She learned to disguise herself, to walk among the living as the little girl she once was. But it was only a mask, a fragile illusion. Whenever someone showed her kindness, it crumbled the moment they discovered her secret, their warmth turning to fear and disgust. Mira grew used to her solitary existence. She moved through the world in her human guise, careful never to let anyone too close. It was a lonely way to live, but it kept her safe. Year after year, she drifted from town to town, never staying long. When the nights grew quiet, her thoughts often turned to her mother and Isabella. She wondered if Isabella had survived the explosion, or if she had finally found her sister. But those thoughts always ended with a sigh, lost to the darkness. Another Midwinter Festival came, and this year the celebrations were especially lively. Maybe it was because the Hypogean War had ended, but the air was filled with laughter and joy. The festive scenes reminded Mira of her days at Violet Manor—a place of shadows, yes, but also the only place where someone like Isabella had cared enough to talk to her. The warmth of the festivities drew her in, but she kept her distance, hiding in the tall grass by the roadside. Years of wandering had made her wary. She didn't want to ruin the joy of the season or risk being discovered and sent running again. But then, footsteps broke the silence. Mira's heart leapt into her throat. Before she could slip away, someone pushed away the grass and found her. Startled, Mira looked up into a pair of bright, curious eyes. The girl who found her seemed surprised at first, but it quickly softened into a warm smile. "Hey, don't be scared. What's your name? Are you lost?" Mira couldn't find her voice. She shook her head quickly, her chest tight with fear. The girl introduced herself as Estrilda and reached out to take Mira's hand. Her touch was warm, so warm that Mira almost forgot to breathe. "Well, kiddo, would you like to stay with us for a while?" Mira's heart raced, torn between the longing to escape her loneliness and the fear of being rejected. She wanted to trust, but the scars of her past held her back. Yet, as she looked into Estrilda's kind eyes, she saw something familiar... a gentleness that reminded her of Isabella. Maybe, just maybe, that was enough to let her believe in someone again. Mira's gaze wavered as she met Estrilda's gentle smile. Finally, she nodded, letting the girl's hand guide her as she took her first step toward a new life beneath the falling snow. Though she still couldn't bring herself to reveal her secret, deep down, she began to dream of a day when she could live without hiding, when she could be truly accepted for who she was.
